Natural disasters and other dangers

Nature seems out of whack

It will not have escaped anyone's attention that there is a lot happening in the world at the moment. Not only are there all kinds of conflicts and wars, but nature seems to be out of whack as well. All this also has consequences for people. We will list a number of natural disasters for you.

Earthquakes and tsunamis

We know that earthquakes can have disastrous consequences. In the 1950s and 1960s, there were seven major earthquakes with a magnitude of at least 8.5 on the Richter scale. But for the rest of the last century, such violent earthquakes did not occur again. Until the 21st century. Then suddenly there were five earthquakes with at least that strength again. The most impressive were the tremors in the sea that caused tsunamis (huge tidal waves). In 2011, Japan was hit by such a tsunami, which severely damaged several nuclear power plants and released radiation.

Famine

There are also other hazards where it can be seen that nature is out of whack. For example, parts of Africa and Asia have been plagued by huge plagues of locusts, with fatal consequences for local harvests. As a result, famines are occurring. Climate change seems to be the main cause of the current plague. Deforestation and climate change also have the effect of floods, storms and droughts which are increasing in severity. Oceans are also no longer obvious food sources anymore. The marine life is threatened by overfishing, soil damage by trawls, environmental pollution, plastic soup and global warming.

Infectious diseases

Over the centuries, there have been many terrible infectious diseases, such as the plague. Consider, for example, the Spanish flu of 1918 with millions of victims in various parts of the world. In the 21st century, several epidemics have broken out, such as SARS, MERS, Ebola. And then the coronavirus with different variants.

Other dangers

There are also very different dangers, which threaten the world's population. Think of the weapons of mass destruction that are stored in the world. But also the increasing dependence on international trade and the Internet. That makes the world economy very vulnerable. The consequences would be far-reaching, for example if the internet stops working for a long time. More and more industries and devices work on the internet and they are therefore down when there is no internet. This could be the case after a cyber war but also if the electrical network network breaks down due to, for example an enemy attack. The remarkable thing is that the Bible has already said all of this. For example, it says: 'For one people shall stand against other people, and one kingdom against the other kingdom; and there shall be famines and infectious diseases and earthquakes in several places' (Matthew 24:7).

The last war

In the 20th century, there have been two major world wars. But did you know that another great global war is coming? The Bible even tells where it will take place, namely in Israel. To be exact, in the valley of Megiddo, 120 kilometers northwest of Jerusalem. This war is also known as the of Armageddon. Armies from Africa, Asia, Russia and Europe will gather there to wage war. To give the armies from Asia space, the great Euphrates River will run dry, so that the eastern army forces have a free passage to Israel. That is how detailed is the Bible.

Small piece of land?

Of course, since the Second World War, many local wars have been fought, right up to the present day. But this latest war will involve involve all the countries of the world. Their enemy is Israel. That is very special, because after many centuries of exile, Israel has only had a country of its own since 1948. From that moment on the world seems to be busy about that small piece of land (half as big as The Netherlands).

Can mankind solve the problem?

Most of the events, that have just been mentioned, have been occurring for a very long time, but not in this frequency and intensity. It is increasingly conceivable that all kinds of apocalyptic disasters, mentioned in the Bible, could strike the world. As humans, we realize more and more that we are not able to counteract these events. We see that, for example with the coronavirus already. Whether the vaccines really work for the long term and also as protection in the case of new variants is still unclear. The only thing we can do is realize that the Bible is true and that God is coming to His purpose with this world. If we believe in Him, we can look forward to a new earth. In the New Testament of the Bible you can read more about this.
